Applied Irrigation Water Measurement
The efficient application of irrigation water is critical to optimizing yields in agricultural applications, as well as maximizing the benefits associated with turfgrass and ornamental landscape plants and trees. Irrigation accounts for a significant portion of freshwater withdrawals; improving efficiencies and optimizing beneficial use in this sector is vital to ongoing stewardship of this critical resource.
While the Irrigation Association recognizes the privacy and property rights of agricultural producers and turf and landscape owners, the IA believes that assessing irrigation efficiency is possible only if water application is quantified by technologies and proven methods. Measurement is critical to identify opportunities for improvement, showcase examples of efficient irrigation and demonstrate stewardship.
IA supports deployment of practices and technologies to measure water applied by irrigation systems.
Adopted by the IA Board of Directors, December 2010.
