The Irrigation Association is seeking an editor-in-chief for Irrigation & Green Industry (monthly circulation to 45,000 landscape professionals).

The Irrigation Association team is a hardworking group that serves the irrigation industry by promoting efficient irrigation through advocacy and professional development. We support our member companies who feed the world and provide healthy spaces for kids to play.

The editor-in-chief will be responsible for managing the editorial content of a print magazine, its website, and the weekly and semi-monthly digital newsletters associated with each edition. In addition, this position will work closely with the advertising sales team in planning editorial and promoting and supporting advertising and other income-generating opportunities. The position will report to the communications director.

Candidates should be high-energy, organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated and have the ability to set, manage and meet priorities under changing conditions. 

You will have the opportunity to help landscape professionals achieve success in their workplaces by managing and growing one of the industry’s top periodicals.

Duties and responsibilities: 

  • Collaborates with publishers on long-term planning and strategy for the publication and its related newsletters and websites
  • Provides clear strategic direction for content topics
  • Manages contributing volunteer, staff and freelance writers
  • Collects supplemental articles as needed
  • Works with the editorial committee on content development and prospective related advertisers
  • Supervises and manages workflow of editorial staff
  • Edits, copyedits and proofs material for AP style, grammar, spelling and consistency
  • Ensures alignment with organizational messaging
  • Provides guidance for graphic design and layout of publication
  • Generates and compiles data to support decision-making
  • Abides by a tight production schedule
  • Works with circulation/audience engagement staff to fulfill subscription efforts and to analyze user data from website and email marketing platforms
  • Assists in developing reader surveys as needed
  • Collaborates on ideas for new products and programs including audience engagement ideas, website enhancements or digital products. 
  • Some business travel required for industry trade shows and/or industry visits (GIE+EXPO, Irrigation Show)

  • Generates innovative ideas on maximizing reader satisfaction
  • Works as a team player to accomplish the strategic goals of the association
  • Commits to the long-term growth of the IA publishing division

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher 
  • At least five years of related senior-level experience in editorial management, journalism, or communications
  • Expert knowledge of AP style
  • Superior writing, editing and proofing skills
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite products
  • Passion for accuracy and attention to detail 

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Industry experience is most desirable 
  • Experience working in an association is a plus 

Other expectations:

  • Full time, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
